Kamala Akhia Sakhet,

Your Literary Labor Coach

From Author to Literary Labor Coach™

Hey, Award Winning Authors! Thank you all for welcoming me into this space! Being in the presence of my community family allows me to genuinely be myself and envision my business exactly as I want. It’s a place of endless possibilities! Hey y’all! I am Khamalah Akhia Sakhet, formerly known as JD Cooper. Let me impart to you that writing is not just my passion. It’s my entrepreneurial journey. I’m a mother, wife, daughter, granddaughter, and sistah. Professionally, I am an author, poet, and the proud founder of JC Publishing (JCP, our new brand), which is on a mission to become the world’s leading publisher of celebrity autobiographies. That includes you! (Pardon me while I take a bow.) At JCP, we dedicate our success to our first-time and seasoned authors through our comprehensive coaching program.

I proudly call myself the Literary Labor Coach™. How did I earn this title? Well, in 2005, I was fortunate to join one of the most prominent black publishing services in the United States—African American Images, under the guidance of Dr. Juanza Kunjufu. A global leader, Dr. Kunjufu entrusted me with learning every aspect of the business. I worked as his editor/proofreader, assisted in the bookstore, and mastered the art of publishing and shipping books. My initial intention for work at African American Images was to learn how to get my poetry book published, but I gained much more than I expected! I met Russell Simmons in 2006. He offered me an opportunity to appear on Def Poetry Jams and requested I bring my book to sell. I didn’t have a book yet, so I declined the offer to perform, but I did publish my first poetry book and accompanying CD in 2007.
